The geeks shall inherit F1

Formula One is changing.
And, while the rule makers flap around (10-year engine freeze, or is it five? Energy-recovery or not? Aero ban? Cost freeze?) trying to figure out which environmentally sensitive regulation to implement next, over in Hong Kong little men with sash windows for glasses are way ahead of it all.
Yes, I'm talking about the brilliant vid posted yesterday about Prius drivers reprogramming their cars and taking part in economy races.
The blokes involved were the Pharaohs of geek-dom, but what they were doing was fascinating and deeply impressive - entertaining in other words. Skilful too, although not in a way we'd normally celebrate on this site.
It got me thinking. Why can't a fuel economy race be exciting? Imagine a Formula One car of 2013 with a 2.4-litre V8 for some noise and thunder but only 100-litres of fuel per race and open rules governing where to get the rest from. Energy recovery? Solar? Get-out-and-push?
The racers will be forced to learn an entirely new technique (fuel management), and the egg-heads back in the F1 factories will be inspired to come up with new and exciting energy recovery/gathering technologies to supplement the fuel shortage.
Us motorists could even benefit from a trickle down of this tech, because let's face it, how long before fuel rationing becomes unavoidable?
