Wake up call

This morning I was woken up by a maniac doing 200mph on a road just outside where I was sleeping.
Oh hang on, I'm at Le Mans. And my tent is by the Mulsanne straight...
Saturday morning at 9am is the start of warm-up. It's one of those wonderful automotive moments - once you've gotten over the shock - when your alarm call is effectively 50 of the most modern, most mental and most beautiful sports cars in the world.
I love this race.
Shortly after warm-up for the main event, the classic Group C sports cars went out for a 40-minute race.
Jag XJR-12s, a Sauber-Merc and Porsche 962s went to war, spitting flames, gurgling fuel and laying big, dark, sticky tyre smudges from their huge slicks all over the famous 8.45-mile track.
The Silver Arrow in particular made my knees go wobbly; and how apt that two of Mercedes' former junior drivers - Karl Wendlinger and Heinz-Harald Frentzen are racing at Le Mans this year, albeit for Aston Martin...
Speaking of Aston, the new Lola Aston Martin LMP1 scored a wonderful 6th in quali - quicker than one of the Audis.
It's the only one in the race, so us Brits are trying to keep our expectations in check.
However, if the Peugeots and Audis are pushing each other as hard as they say, then the Lola-Aston should be right there to pick up the pieces...
Excited? You betcha.
