Valentino's big head

Posted by Nick Trott at 10:00AM on Monday 29 September, 2008 0 Comments

Valentino RossiApparently, Valentino Rossi is expected to test his Yamaha MotoGP bike in Japan today - the day after he secured a sixth MotoGP world title. Somehow I don't think he's going to make it...

'Tomorrow I have a test,' said Rossi, 'but I am fighting to make it start in the afternoon!'

Who could deny the finest MotoGP racer of his generation, and indeed any generation, a lie in? Valentino Rossi's 2008 crown will surely go down as one of his finest.

Riding a bike lacking the sheer overall horsepower of Casey Stoner's Ducati, Rossi's punishing consistency and psychological strength eventually won the day.

How many times did we see Rossi pumping in the laps during practice and qualifying, honing his Yamaha to perfection? It often looked as if pole position was secondary in importance to set-up during these crucial practice sessions.

And how often did we see Rossi make a steady start to each event, only to pick off each rider during the race to win by a comfortable margin?

The point is that Rossi's mental effort and agility appears way, way higher than any other rider on the grid.

Which means that to beat Rossi in 2009, archrivals Stoner and Ducati will have to somehow beat his brain. And that's a formidable task.
