Playing the Japanese name game

bill thomasI'm in Japan at the moment and enjoying Japanese car model names.

Not only the names, but the fact that I don't recognise a good percentage of the cars on the roads over here, which is unsettling for a car nut.

"S**t, there goes a Ractis, what the f**k's that?"

Here's a little window into the world of weird and wonderful names for just one manufacturer - Toyota.

Follow this link to see what I mean.

OK, you've got a lot of Japanese script, relax, that's cool, look down and you also have some random model names, 'Alphard' and 'Voxy' among them. See the lower faint-red rectangle at the top left? Click on the one to its right. Whoa! More cars you didn't know much about, including the Rumion and Fielder.

Third box along includes one of my favourite cars of all, anywhere in the world ever, the Toyota Century. Click on the pic of the car and be deeply impressed with the presentation slides. Yep, it's brand new. And built to the maximum Toyota quality. You can bet it rides superbly. I love the Century.

Back to the previous page and flick along the boxes again. Fifth across is the Toyota Noah. I've been in a Noah and it's a brilliant device, incredibly roomy for its relatively small footprint. It also has a silly name - no doubt a tenuous link to the famous ark and its ability to carry lots of creatures.

Check out box six and the supremely named Toyota Belta. And in the last box on the right, the Raum, Regius Ace and that magnificent Ractis.

All of these things are pounding around the roads over here and I haven't a clue what the hell they're about. And that's just Toyota.
