Ferrari excitement

Posted by Bill Thomas at 11:20AM on Tuesday 13 May, 2008 1 Comment

Ferrari CaliforniaI'm the sort of person who can get excited by pretty much any car. Datsun 120Ys included.

So looking at a brand new Ferrari is never going to be a negative experience for this car freak, no matter how ugly it is.

Not saying this is ugly, mind.

It's not, to my eyes. It's a bit heavy round the rump thanks to the space that folding metal roof takes up, but I still like the upward slashes on the three quarter panels and over the boot lid, and I love the relationship between the rear lights and the exhaust pipes.

And the nose is the most beautiful from Ferrari since the 456.

It's obviously aimed at the American market and you can understand their thinking.

That might not endear this car to Euro purists, but if the 599 is anything to go by, it'll still go, stop and corner like a proper high-tech thoroughbred.

I think Ferrari are onto a winner with this car.

  • I'm with you on this one. I don't get why people keep calling it ugly, because it isn't. There are little details all over it, which makes it visually engaging like a Maser GT (prettier?) Also, more bizzarely, why are people complaining about the name? What's wrong with California?

I think it suits the image Ferrari wants you to have of this car, cruising top-down on an empty highway with the sun starting to set, and it brings back the name from the '60s as well, of course. Besides, we can make proper judgements when we see it in the metal at the London Motor show... if it appears. If not, with a name like that, it'll probably appear in a Red Hot Chili Peppers video near you.
